What Does Surf Wax Do?

Applying surf wax to your board is essential for maintaining grip and balance on your board. Without surf wax, it would be near impossible to stand on your board, let alone do any turns or tricks. Different types of surfing waxes can provide different amounts of stickiness and grip to your board, so if you are a beginner, you may end up trying a few different ones until you find something that you prefer. Different surfing waxes also fair better at different temperatures. This means that you should check that the water temperatures are suitable so that the wax performs to its highest level. When you find one that you love, you will only have to worry about developing your skill so that you can stay upright in the water.

Applying Surfboard Wax to Your Board

If you are new to surfing, you may not be familiar with how to apply the surfboard wax to your surfboard. The first step to waxing a surfboard is to clean off any old wax that is still on top. If you have a brand new board, this step isn’t necessary and you can move onto the next step.

The next step is to apply the basecoat. The basecoat is important because it will stay put and help you to stay in place; even when it starts to rub off. It also helps your topcoat to last longer. Basecoat wax is usually harder and more difficult to apply, but there is really no right or wrong way to do it. You are attempting to form little bumps of wax that will help you to keep balanced when surfing.

Applying your topcoat is the next step. This wax is usually softer and will be appropriate for the temperature of the water that you are surfing in. The topcoat will ensure that your feet can properly grip your board.

The topcoat needs to be reapplied more frequently than the basecoat but the more you apply wax to your board, the more you will be able to adjust it until you work out what you like best.
